HUNTING WITH RIM FIRE HANDGUNS: IS THAT RESPONSIBLE SPORTSMANSHIP?
Although I was allowed to hunt alone at an early age and had my choice of several firearms in my home I was always a "long gun " man. In translation, my weapon of choice was either a rifle or a shotgun…………that was until I hunted with my "Uncle Owen."
Let me explain who my uncle Owen was. To be quite honest he was my great uncle on my father's side, but he was more of an uncle to me than nearly any other. He knew of my love for the outdoors and when it came to hunting he was the real deal. I'll write some articles that will include him in detail later, he was my friend.
At about the age of 13 he took me hunting; this was where where I first saw a handgun used in the field. He owned a High Standard Supermatic Citation model 107. I remember standing in awe as he took two squirrels with this 4-1/2 inch barreled wonder at, what I thought then to be, a remarkable distance. The only other thing more amazing than his effortless marksmanship was the fact that it was not squirrel season, but that was just uncle Owen.
I would come to own this gun after his passing.
High Standard pistols, rifles, and shotguns. A name obscured by time, but the quality was excellent and their prices keep going up.
• Maybe you were fortunate enough to have an "Uncle Owen" in your life and you want to honor him with a shout out.
• Maybe you've got a High Standard model that was your favorite……or not.
• I know one thing, rim fire rounds are capable of stopping large enough game; the secret is bullet placement.
What do you have to say?

I appreciate your input. These are the times when a man needs to keep his family close and his enemies closer. (The Godfather)
