This question is easily answered by a Bill Jordan story that is a favorite of mine.
For those of you who don't know who Bill Jordan is/was; he was a western border agent who worked with the Texas Rangers and the U.S. Border Patrol in the lawless period of 1930-1960. He wrote several books of his exploits, my favorites are No Second Place Winner and Tales of the Rio Grande. He was a legendary wheel gun (revolver) expert with nerves of steel and excellent observational skills.
Back in that era, it was not uncommon for banditos or fugitives to do their crimes in Texas, then skedaddle across the border where they were "safe". Safe was a relative term when Bill Jordan was on your tail. He was fearless and relentless in his pursuit to get his quarry.
My favorite story was one where he pursued a fugitive across the border into Mexico to what the fugitive thought was a safe haven. There, in a cantina, with two of his compadres they drank and demoralized themselves in various fashions; appreciated by the locals as they spent their ill gotten gain. Though Bill Jordan had a couple of fellow officers that had accompanied him across the "bad lands" he insisted on going into the cantina alone. Now that takes some stones!
At this point it is really important for you to realize the speed with which Bill Jordan could draw his trusty "six shooter". Using a double action revolver, Bill Jordan was recorded drawing, firing and hitting his target in .27 of a second. (See No Second Place Winner by Bill Jordan.)
A few minutes passed after Bill entered the cantina alone. The was an exchange of loud obscene language and the 3 quick shots from the sound of a handgun. Bill Jordan emerged from the cantina, moments later and his concerned friends questioned him on what happened. "Well," Bill said, "Seems that one of those men fancied himself to be a gun fighter and his two friends thought that they were bulletproof." After a brief silence a slight smile crept across his weathered face. "Unfortunately for them," he said, "All three men were dead wrong."
Where we find ourselves as a nation today would make Jordan scratch his head in utter disbelief. The politics now would cost him his badge and his freedom. What have we come to when the guilty men hide behind obscure misinterpreted law, defended by our tax dollars and set free to continue their lawless behavior by judges and juries with no conscience? We sure could use some Bill Jordan's again.
How fast are you? .27 seconds has yet to be broken……………but that's what they make practice for…… unless Obama has his way and taxes the ammunition where you can't afford to even protect your home!
To answer the question how fast is fast enough? I'm sure that those 3 men would attest that .27 seconds was plenty quick.
